An Integrated Treatment Model for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder:
Hypnotically Facilitated Exposure-Response Prevention Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Hypno-imagery, and Ego State Therapy
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a heterogenous condition. Its manifestations are the result of a complex stress-diathesis interaction. Despite the emergence of many evidence-based psycho-social and biological treatments for (OCD), many with this disorder fail to receive satisfactory benefits from them and fall into the general category of refractory-to-treatment.
In this workshop participants will become acquainted with the etiology of OCD Spectrum diseases and the nature of their co-morbidities. They will be introduced to the history of evidence-based therapies for OCD such as Exposure Response Prevention (ERP), biological therapies, and combinations of these. They will then learn specifically how to use and sequence several hypnotically facilitated treatments for OCD. These will include hypnotically facilitated Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Hypno-Imagery, Ego-Strengthening, and basic Ego State Therapy.
A growing body of evidence suggests that dissociation plays an important role in at least 30% of diagnosed OCD populations. In this workshop the participants will learn how to use some basic Ego State Therapy Techniques that have been shown to help with many refractory patients. The workshop will consist of lecture (including case material), practica, and (time permitting) case consultation and will emphasize an integrated treatment model geared to the elimination/mitigation of the symptoms that may include several types of hypnotic and non-hypnotic therapies in concert.

Bridging Two Worlds: The Integration of Personal Mythology Techniques
into Ego State Therapy
This workshop integrates social reconstruction techniques, especially, hypnotically facilitated Personal Mythology techniques which allow individuals to experience deep explorations and transformations of belief systems and can bring about profound and permanent changes They also bridge the gap between external history and interior self-perceptions. The deep transformations they produce are utilized to help patients form healing commitments to new belief systems that can accelerate integration. Patients are also helped to create a path for ongoing work with conflicting belief systems. This workshop will consist of lecture, demonstration, and practica.

The Evolution of Ego State Therapy: Theory and Clinical Practice
Ego State Therapy has evolved from its creation in the 1970’s. This was foreseen by its co-creators who anticipated that their theories would eventually be replaced by others (Watkins & Watkins, 1997) and predicted that the fundaments of their models would receive confirmation through biological research. Many developments in mind sciences have emerged over the years. Among them are the elaborations of object relations theories and Self Psychology, the emergence of the intersubjective model, physiological and neuroimaging explorations of brain/mind/body phenomena, the emergence of epigenetics, the psychology and neurophysiology of affect development and of attachment, and the integration of Ego State Therapy with other therapeutic modalities an techniques such as EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, energy therapies, and social construction therapies. In this workshop the foundations of Ego State Therapy will be reviewed and integrated with contemporary neurophysiology. Several advanced topics that are of primary significance to Ego State Therapy will be presented. These include a post-modern approach to phase oriented treatment models, how to form healing therapeutic alliances, the introduction of developmental repair into therapy, the use of the transference/countertransference field, the countertransference trance, grief resolution, the creation/activation of positive ego states, and the integration of Ego State Therapy with the social construction therapy, Personal Mythology with emphasis on the use of “The Hero’s Journey” in work with trauma victims..

Post Modern Paths to Integration: Therapeutic Alliances, Countertransference Trances, and Personal Mythology
This workshop presents practical modern and post-modern hypnotically facilitated psychotherapy approaches that can help strengthen patients’ ability to access difficult material within the matrix of intersubjective safety. This matrix develops out of therapeutic alliance and the complex transference-countertransference field, and moves from the interpersonal to the intrapsychic realm. A Road Map for the development of therapeutic alliances will be shared. Participants will learn to develop and use the Countertransference Trance as a source of intersubjective relationship and information that helps move therapy forward.
The workshop also integrates social construction techniques, especially, hypnotically facilitated Personal Mythology techniques which allow individuals to experience deep explorations and transformations of belief systems and can bring about profound and permanent changes They also bridge the gap between external history and interior self-perceptions and between insight and action. The deep transformations they produce are utilized to help patients form healing commitments to new belief systems that can accelerate integration. Patients are also helped to create a path for ongoing work with conflicting belief systems. This workshop will consist of lecture, demonstration, and practica.

FOUNDATIONS OF EGO STATE THERAPY IN THE NEW MILLENIUM
Ego State Therapy, a therapeutic modality that emerged in the 1970’s, is focused on working therapeutically with the polypsychic energies of the human mind. It combines techniques of individual, family, and group therapies and has been used for the successful treatment of many disorders including complex post traumatic stress disorder and the dissociative disorders. Its co-creators believed that Ego State Therapy “should generate research hypotheses while suggesting new and as yet unobserved relations….. [and] make prior assumptions explicit” (Watkins & Watkins, 1997, p. 2). They assumed that future neurobiological studies would confirm their theories.
This workshop will introduce the fundamentals of Ego State Therapy in light of the evolution of the fields of trauma, dissociation, and psychotherapy in the past 30 years . It will include history and neurobiological foundations as well as the role of neuroplasticity as they relate to clinical issues. Participants will learn how ego states are experienced, how they are formed, and the roles of the trauma response and attachment variables in the formation of pathological ego states. Participants will also learn how to activate safely and stabilize ego states in therapy, securely access trauma, introduce corrective emotional experiences, and work toward integration. The mechanisms of healing in of Ego State Therapy will be explained as will the integration of other therapeutic modalities (such as somatic experiencing, energy therapies, CBT, and EMDR) into Ego State Therapy. The problems presented by malevolent, silent, and immature ego states will be considered,
Although the workshop will include lecture and slides, it will focus on clinical applications., and will integrate lively experiential components with the inclusion of video, practica, role-playing,, and discussion. Participants will be prepared for more advanced studies of Ego State Therapy

Advanced Ego State Therapy and Hypoanalysis
This advanced workshop (June 24-27, 2010)will focus on several topics in which the use of Ego State Therapy and other hypnoanalytic techniques can bring healing and transformation. They will be descr1ibed below and will include Dreams and Hypnotic Dreaming, the Wounded Healer and Healing the Wounded Healer, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Advanced Developmental Repair Techniques; and The Vanishing Ego and the Emerging Transpersomal Self ─ The Relationship with the Terminally Ill Patient. The workshop will be followed by optional Post Workshop Group Supervision sessions (June 28-29, 2010) with Claire Frederick, M. D. and the opportunity for individual sessions with Claire Frederick, M. D. (June 30, 2010).
I. Dreams and Hypnotic Dreams: Participants will learn how to help their patients utilize their dream work from ego- state as well as other significant perspectives. . Each day of the workshop we will do dream work using the dreams participants choose to offer. The specific use of Hypnotic Dreams in Ego State Therapy will be included and demonstrated daily.
II. The Wounded Healer and Healing the Wounded Healer: Participants will learn more about what draws us to our profession. They will also examine the spectrum of disorders which may occur in therapists and have an opportunity to view alternatives for dealing with difficult as well as ordinary issues. They will also learn more about Vicarious Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, the effects of receiving traumatic transferences., therapist burnout, and the impact of therapist interpersonal issues on therapy. An assortment of techniques for helping therapists heal and refresh and re-energize themselves will be shared and demonstrated, and accompanied by group practica.
III. Advanced Developmental Repair Techniques: In this section of the workshop participants will learn the basis for a number of specific formal techniques for developmental repair. These will include techniques (From Baker, Murrray-Jobsis, Frederick and McNeal, Daitch, and others) for the creation of object permanence and object constancy, for the creation and strengthening of boundaries, for hypnotic renurturing, for affect management. and for the use of transitional experiences.
IV. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: The evidence-based therapies (pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic) for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) are emphasized the current literature. Yet, a significant percentage of OCD patient have symptoms that are more or less refractory to standardized biological and psychological treatments. Dissociation is thought by many to be one of the etiologic factors for the disorder. This workshop offers clinicians ways of placing their Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) patients on a diagnostic spectrum from the most biologocally determined to the most psychologically determined. It utilizes a stress-diathesis model which recognizes genomic expressions as well as more specific mind-body communications. Its purpose is to help the clinician use specific diagnostic tools and structured staging of therapy to deliver individualized treatment including Ego-Strengthening, Ego State Therapy, and other hypnotically facilitated psychotherapies (when appropriate) for each patient with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This component of the workshop is designed to share a great deal of scientific evidence about OCD as well as practical solutions for those who suffer from OCD and for their distressed families.
V. The Vanishing Ego and the Emerging Transpersonal Self─The Relationship with the Terminally Ill Patient: The special problems of the terminally patient have received the attention of the medical and psychotherapeutic communities for many years. Salient topics explored have included the reversal of illness and the prolongation of life, improvement of the quality of life, and assistance with the stages encountered in the process of dying. In this workshop the appropriate utilization of the hypnotherapeutic relationship and the internal family of selves to help determine and meet the psychotherapeutic needs of the terminally ill patient will be addressed. These will include the necessity of identifying the presence of a "life" framework or a "death" framework as well as the use of Ego State Therapy. And other approaches for the +resolution of internal conflicts for greater personality integration, life review, and decisions about the future. The importance of projective/evocative ego-strengthening in facing life problems, transpersonal links, and enhanced spirituality will also be discussed as will the important roles of hypnotherapeutic transferences and countertransferences as holographic representations of the patient's situation in the powerful presence of terminal illness.
VI. Optional Post Workshop Group Supervision: On June 28, 2010. There is an opportunity for group supervision with Claire Frederick, M. D. at the Erickson Institute. Groups will be limited to 10 participants.
VII. Post Workshop Individual Meetings. On June 29, 2010 there is an opportunity for individual work with Claire Frederick, M.. D. Those interested should email Dr. Frederick at clairefrederick@clairefrederick.com for scheduling.
